External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday greeted the people of Eritrea on their country's Independence Day, reaffirming India's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with the African nation.
Diplomatic Greetings
In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar wrote, 'Greetings to the government and people of Eritrea on their Independence Day. India remains committed to strengthening our bilateral ties and cooperation.'
Historical Relations
India and Eritrea have maintained diplomatic relations since Eritrea's independence in 1993. Over the years, the two countries have collaborated in various fields including capacity building, education, and healthcare. India has provided scholarships to Eritrean students under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program.
Recent Engagements
The ties have seen renewed focus in recent years with several high-level visits. In 2023, India's President Droupadi Murmu visited Eritrea, becoming the first Indian President to do so. The visit aimed at boosting trade and investment between the two nations.
Eritrea, located in the Horn of Africa, is strategically important for India's maritime security and trade routes. The country has significant mineral resources, including gold and potash, which present opportunities for Indian companies.
Future Cooperation
India has expressed interest in enhancing cooperation in sectors such as mining, agriculture, and information technology. Both countries are also working together in multilateral forums like the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement.
The greetings come at a time when India is expanding its footprint in Africa, focusing on development partnerships and capacity building. The Ministry of External Affairs has outlined a comprehensive strategy for engaging with African nations under the 'India-Africa Forum Summit' framework.
Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1993, after a long war of liberation. The day is celebrated annually as a national holiday with parades and cultural events.
