Japan has once again demonstrated its unique ability to transform ordinary places into extraordinary attractions, this time with a regional airport receiving a complete Pokémon-themed makeover. Starting July 7, 2026, Noto Satoyama Airport will be renamed the "Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport," becoming the first airport in the world to officially carry a Pokémon-inspired name.
Extensive Theming and Design
The transformation goes far beyond simple decorations or a few Pikachu posters. The airport, located on the scenic Noto Peninsula, will maintain its Pokémon theme until September 2029. The project is part of a broader initiative to revive tourism and uplift community spirits following the devastating 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake. Local authorities have partnered with the Pokémon With You Foundation to create a space that brings joy, especially for children and families affected by the disaster.
The airport entrance will feature giant Pokémon displays, colorful themed pillars, and redesigned signs inspired by the Pokémon universe. The official logo now incorporates Poké Balls and Pikachu graphics with the shape of the Noto Peninsula. The centerpiece of the makeover is a massive two-story atrium featuring a giant Pikachu balloon flying an airplane in the middle of the terminal. Pokémon characters will be spread throughout the space, creating an atmosphere more akin to a theme park than an airport.
Heartfelt Tributes and Hope
Beyond the playful elements, there is a deeper emotional aspect to the redesign. One section of the airport will showcase a large artwork titled "A Bright Future," serving as a message of hope and recovery after the earthquake. Another visual called "Sky of Hope" depicts Pokémon soaring through rainbow-filled skies and will appear across the airport, on souvenirs, buses, and special merchandise.
Exclusive Pokémon Dining and Shopping
Visitors to Restaurant Annon inside the airport can enjoy Pokémon-themed pancakes and special drinks, with collectible placemats included in combo meals. The airport shop will sell limited-edition items available only there, including themed T-shirts, luggage tags, keychains, suitcase belts, and exclusive "Sky of Hope" merchandise.
Extended Experience Beyond the Airport
Japan is extending the Pokémon experience beyond the terminal. From mid-July 2026, specially designed Pokémon buses will operate across the Noto Peninsula, connecting travelers to nearby attractions and sightseeing spots. Some buses will run between Kanazawa Station, the airport, and Wajima, while other routes are designed specifically for Pokémon tourism. These buses are expected to operate mainly during weekends, holidays, and peak travel seasons, likely drawing long queues of fans.
Only Japan could turn post-earthquake recovery into such a creative, emotional, and wildly fun initiative. Based on social media reactions, Pokémon fans worldwide are already adding the Noto Peninsula to their travel bucket lists.
