Major Fire Erupts at Karachi's Gul Plaza Mall, Weeks After Deadly Tragedy
A significant fire has broken out at Gul Plaza shopping mall in Karachi, Pakistan, on Sunday, according to reports from ARY News. This alarming incident occurs merely one month after a devastating blaze at the same location claimed the lives of more than 80 individuals, raising serious concerns about safety and structural integrity in the area.
Fire Origin and Immediate Response
Local police authorities have indicated that the fire originated in a shop situated within an alleyway connected to Gul Plaza. Thick, billowing smoke is currently emanating from multiple shops, with preliminary assessments suggesting that sections of the already compromised structure may have sustained additional damage.
In the wake of the outbreak, a substantial crowd assembled in front of the mall as Rescue 1122 teams spearheaded firefighting efforts. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has swiftly mobilized its resources after receiving a formal request for assistance from Rescue 1122.
Emergency Water Supply Measures
Under directives from the KWSC CEO, an emergency has been declared at the NIPA and Safoora hydrants to ensure a robust water supply for firefighting operations. A spokesperson for the Water Corporation confirmed that tankers stationed at the Sakhi Hassan hydrant have also been placed on high alert and are ready for deployment.
The Hydrant Cell supervisor is maintaining continuous communication with rescue officials to guarantee an uninterrupted flow of water. The spokesperson emphasized, "The provision of water tankers will persist until the fire is completely extinguished," underscoring the commitment to containing the blaze.
Background: Previous Fire and Administrative Jurisdiction
This latest fire follows a tragic incident on March 18, where Karachi's Deputy Commissioner-South provided testimony to a Judicial Commission investigating the earlier Gul Plaza fire. In his submission, he clarified that the shopping mall on MA Jinnah Road falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
He further noted that the internal roads flanking Gul Plaza are managed by the TMC Saddar. On the day of the previous fire, traffic congestion was reported, though Traffic Police acted promptly to clear pathways. "The emergency relief vehicles and fire brigade reached the spot without any major obstacle," the official stated.
He attributed temporary road narrowing to ongoing Green Line infrastructure work, which increased traffic pressure. However, no encroachments or municipal activities were found to have impeded access for relief vehicles. Authorities also managed crowd control to prevent interference with rescue operations.
