In a proactive move to address the issue of silt accumulation in the Tungabhadra reservoir, farmers in Karnataka have launched a unique 'desilting festival' near the Gunda botanical garden. The initiative, named the 'Silt Festival', was organized by the Ballari Raitha Sangha in the Tungabhadra backwaters on Tuesday.
Farmers Take Matters into Their Own Hands
Speaking at the event, a prominent seer emphasized that if the government fails to remove the accumulated silt, farmers will be compelled to undertake desilting efforts themselves. The festival aims to draw attention to the urgent need for silt removal, which is crucial for maintaining the reservoir's water storage capacity and ensuring adequate irrigation for agricultural lands.
Impact on Agriculture and Water Supply
The Tungabhadra reservoir is a vital water source for farming communities in the region. Over time, silt buildup has reduced its storage capacity, leading to water shortages during dry seasons. Farmers have long demanded government action, but with little progress, they have decided to launch this community-driven initiative.
The desilting festival not only highlights the farmers' determination but also serves as a call to authorities to prioritize the reservoir's maintenance. Participants hope that the government will take note and implement long-term solutions to prevent future silt accumulation.
