The proposed 60 km Namma Metro extension from Bengaluru to Tumakuru is set to become Karnataka's first inter-district Metro corridor. This high-speed elevated transit network will connect residential, educational, and industrial zones, significantly improving regional connectivity.
Rs 20,000 Crore Transit Vision
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlines two implementation models for the corridor. Direct execution by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is estimated at Rs 18,000 crore, while a public-private partnership (PPP) model would cost around Rs 20,000 crore due to additional financial requirements.
Route and Alignment
The Metro line will begin from the Madavara (BIEC) Metro station and pass through Nelamangala, Dabaspet, and Kyathasandra before reaching Tumakuru. Several stretches are planned parallel to the Tumakuru Road service lanes, following the NH 48 stretch.
One-Hour Commute and Station Design
Officials estimate that the corridor could reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Tumakuru to nearly one hour. Wider station spacing is designed to improve average operational speed and reduce overall journey duration.
The updated DPR proposes 16 stations instead of the earlier 25. Key stations include those near Tumakuru University, Siddaganga Medical College, Tumakuru Bus Stand, and the terminal station at Sira Gate.
Projected Ridership and Impact
The alignment has been planned to serve residential and industrial pockets around Nelamangala and Dabaspet. Estimates suggest the corridor could witness a daily ridership of nearly 3 lakh passengers.
Debate Over Future Transit Choice
While the Metro proposal is under review, some have suggested alternative mass transit systems, such as regional rapid transit systems and suburban rail networks, for connectivity between Bengaluru and Tumakuru. The debate continues over the most suitable transit option for the region.
