Kerala Launches 'Priyadarshini' Scheme for Free Bus Travel
The Kerala government has launched the 'Priyadarshini' scheme, offering free bus travel for women and transgender individuals across the state. The initiative was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a ceremony attended by Transport Minister C P John and Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes K A Thulasi, along with senior officials.
Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries can travel for free on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, including city, ordinary, and fast passenger services. The move aims to enhance mobility and economic participation for women and transgender people, promoting gender equality and social inclusion.
Transport Minister C P John stated that the scheme would be implemented through a smart card system, ensuring seamless access for users. The government has allocated funds to cover the operational costs, with an estimated annual expenditure of ₹100 crore. Beneficiaries can apply for the smart card through designated KSRTC offices or online portals.
The 'Priyadarshini' scheme is part of the state's broader efforts to improve public transportation and support marginalized communities. Kerala has been at the forefront of progressive policies, including the recent launch of the 'Safe Kerala' project for women's safety. The initiative has received widespread appreciation from women's rights groups and transgender activists, who see it as a significant step toward financial independence and social dignity.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the government's commitment to inclusive development, stating that the scheme would reduce the financial burden on women and transgender individuals, enabling them to access education, employment, and healthcare more easily. The launch event was held at the Kerala State Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram.
