Kolkata Scorcher at 36°C, Thunderstorms Expected from Sunday

Kolkata endured another scorching day on Friday as the maximum temperature reached 36°C. However, the Met office has forecast relief within two days. An upper air circulation over east Uttar Pradesh is expected to break the warm spell and trigger thundershowers in south Bengal and Kolkata between Sunday and Tuesday.

Thunderstorm Predictions for South Bengal

Districts across south Bengal, as well as the western districts of Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram, and East and West Burdwan, are likely to experience thunderstorms during this period.

A bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre stated: "A trough runs from east Uttar Pradesh to South Bangladesh across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal at 0.9 km above mean sea level. The upper air cyclonic circulation over east Uttar Pradesh and its neighbourhood merged with the above trough. In view of favourable wind pattern and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, thunderstorm and associated activities are very likely to increase over Bengal from April 25."

Kolkata and Surrounding Areas

The chances of thunderstorms in Kolkata and its surroundings are higher between Sunday and Tuesday, according to RMC weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay. "It may be preceded by sporadic rain on Saturday. But the possibility of more intense thunderstorms is higher in the next three days. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely on Sunday in East and West Burdwan, Murshidabad, Nadia, and North 24 Parganas. Thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely at these places on Sunday. The impact may be felt in the city," he said.

Severe Weather in South and West Districts

Districts in the south and west are likely to be lashed by severe thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds over the subsequent two days, the bulletin added. Most parts of south Bengal will be warm and humid on Saturday.
