Margao: The Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) has initiated a comprehensive series of infrastructure upgrades and pre-monsoon maintenance activities along its western coastal route. These measures have resulted in temporary reductions in train speeds and minor delays at certain sections, as the railway works to ensure long-term safety and reliability.
Scope of Maintenance Works
The ongoing works include cutting and lowering of tracks, ballastless track repairs, track lifting, deep screening, through-track renewal, and maintenance of track laying machines. According to KRCL, these activities are critical for maintaining the structural integrity of the tracks and ensuring passenger safety and comfort. The pre-monsoon period is particularly crucial as the route traverses complex terrain and experiences heavy rainfall across several stretches.
Operational Challenges
Operating on a single-line railway system with high line capacity utilisation, the Konkan Railway route demands meticulous operational management. The challenging geography and weather conditions necessitate proactive track inspections and preventive measures. To carry out these works safely, train speeds have been temporarily reduced at specific sections. A KRCL spokesperson stated, "These measures are temporary and necessary for long-term operational reliability."
Expected Completion and Improvements
Most pre-monsoon and maintenance activities are expected to be completed by the end of May. After that, train punctuality is expected to improve significantly. KRCL emphasized that passengers are being regularly updated on train schedules through station announcements, electronic displays, official railway websites, and authorised mobile applications.
