Ladakh Groups Seek Meeting with Amit Shah for Sixth Schedule

Ladakh's two main political groupings have sought a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his two-day visit to the region, aiming to press their demands for Sixth Schedule status and statehood. Shah is scheduled to attend events marking Buddha Purnima in Leh on April 30 and May 1.

Leaders Unanimously Seek Dialogue

Tsering Dorje Lakrook, co-chairman of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), stated that Ladakhi politicians and activists have unanimously decided to request time with Shah. "Since he is coming himself, there should be a meaningful discussion in Leh on issues concerning Ladakh," Lakrook told reporters on Tuesday, flanked by environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk and Asgar Ali Karbali, co-chairman of the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).

Sub-Committee Meeting Called Inadequate

On April 26, Ladakh's lieutenant governor announced a sub-committee meeting scheduled for May 22, a move that LAB and KDA have criticized as insufficient. Lakrook emphasized that Shah's visit presents an opportunity to convene a meeting of the high-powered committee, noting that the May 22 talks are only at the sub-committee level and will not result in key decisions.

Draft Proposal Submitted to Home Ministry

LAB and KDA have submitted a draft proposal to the home ministry outlining their demands. "Now it is the government's turn to present its offer," Lakrook said. Sonam Wangchuk added that holding talks during Shah's visit could help rebuild trust. "A two-hour meeting can be easily arranged during the home minister's visit," Wangchuk said, warning that failure to engage would send a negative message.

Background of Talks

Dialogue between Ladakhi groups and the Centre has been ongoing since 2023 under a high-powered committee led by the home ministry. Multiple rounds of talks have taken place, with the most recent on February 4, which the groups described as inconclusive.
