Largest Hindu Temple Outside India Opens in New Jersey

Akshardham is among the most renowned Hindu temple complexes globally. A massive Hindu temple complex in Robbinsville, New Jersey, is drawing visitors worldwide. Besides its spiritual significance, the temple is noted for its immense size and architectural brilliance.

BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham: A Modern Marvel

This temple complex, known as BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham, is described by the Associated Press as the largest Hindu temple outside India in the modern era. Spanning 183 acres, it includes a main temple and various community spaces. The site officially opened in October 2023 after years of planning and construction.

Grand Scale of the Temple

At the heart of the campus is the Mahamandir, the main temple building. According to the official BAPS fact sheet, it measures 191 feet in height, 255 feet in width, and 345 feet in length. The temple was constructed using principles from ancient Hindu texts and traditional Indian temple building methods. BAPS notes that there are nine shikhars (temple spires) and the largest elliptical dome ever built in traditional stone mandir architecture. A popular feature is the sculptures: over 10,000 carved statues depicting Hindu philosophy, music, dance, and spiritualism.

A Project Years in the Making

The vision for the temple came from Pramukh Swami Maharaj, a spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. Construction began in stages after land was purchased in 2008, with major work starting in 2015. Over 12,500 volunteers contributed, and nearly 2 million cubic feet of stone were carved and assembled. The Associated Press reported that the temple required 4.7 million hours of work by volunteers and artisans. The complex also includes Nilkanth Plaza, featuring a 49-foot bronze statue of Nilkanth Varni (the teenage form of Swaminarayan) and a traditional Indian stepwell.

Controversies and Visitor Information

Despite positive architectural reception, the project faced controversies. A lawsuit alleged that contractors exploited Indian workers who came to the US on religious visas. BAPS denied any wrongdoing. The Akshardham campus is open daily except Tuesdays, with a dress code for worship. Photography is allowed only in designated areas. The temple serves both as a place of worship and as a grand structure showcasing traditional Indian stone architecture outside Asia, symbolizing the growing Indian presence in America.
