Leopard Attack Claims Life in Pauri Village During Makarsakranti Ritual
A tragic incident unfolded in Bada village of Pauri district on Thursday. A 51-year-old man lost his life after a leopard attacked him. The victim, identified as Laxman Shahi, originally hailed from Nepal.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Laxman Shahi had gone to a small pond in the village to perform a Makarsakranti ritual. This traditional practice involves taking a holy dip. After completing the ritual, he was returning from the pond. The leopard attacked him during his return journey.
The attack resulted in fatal injuries. Shahi succumbed to the mauling at the scene. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community.
Forest Officials Respond to Safety Concerns
Forest officials provided details about the location. They stated the area had solar lights installed. There were no dense bushes or other hiding spots for the animal. Despite these conditions, the leopard carried out the attack.
Mahatim Yadav, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Pauri, addressed the situation. He acknowledged the villagers' growing safety concerns. In response, the forest department has taken immediate action.
Increased patrolling is now in place around the village. Officials have also installed camera traps to monitor leopard movements. The department has sought necessary permissions for further steps.
"We are exploring options to either trap the leopard or, if required, eliminate it to ensure public safety," DFO Yadav explained. The goal is to prevent any future attacks and restore a sense of security among residents.
