Ludhiana Heatwave: Temperature Hits 44°C, Govt Offices Reschedule
Ludhiana Heatwave: 44°C Forces Govt Office Timings Change

Ludhiana: A punishing heatwave has paralyzed daily life across the district as daytime temperatures soared to 44°C, forcing local authorities to curtail government office hours to protect the public from the blistering conditions.

Current Heatwave Conditions

The Indian Meteorological Department reported that overnight temperatures offered little relief, bottoming out at 26°C. Searing winds effectively emptied public spaces during the afternoon, with motorists describing the outdoor air as an open oven. The extreme conditions have forced commuters to carry water rations to avoid heat exhaustion.

Government Response

Compounding the crisis, the scorching weather has triggered an adjustment to public infrastructure schedules. Local residents welcomed a government mandate shifting administrative operations to an early-morning schedule, with doors closing at 1:30 PM to ensure citizens can complete official business before the most dangerous afternoon heat peaks.

Relief on the Horizon

Relief is imminent for the embattled region. A shifting western disturbance — a high-altitude storm system originating from the Mediterranean — is tracking across northern India, promised to break the heatwave with cloud cover and scattered thundershowers. Pavneet Kaur Kingra, head of climate change and agricultural meteorology at Punjab Agricultural University, stated that the storm system will drive temperatures down significantly over the coming days.

Temperature Forecast

  • May 28: 42°C
  • May 29: 38°C (storm system arrives)
  • May 30: 37°C high, 21°C low (peak relief)
  • May 31: Gradual warming begins
  • June 2: 40°C

The respite will be brief. Meteorological data shows the western disturbance will clear by the end of the month, triggering a gradual warming trend from May 31 that will push temperatures back up to 40°C by June 2.
