The deputy commissioner's office in Mangaluru has taken serious note of a letter from Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta, which calls for changes and expansion of key city bus routes. The additional deputy commissioner has written to senior transport department officials, urging that the matter be presented urgently at the upcoming Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting for a decision.
District Administration Supports MP's Proposal
The district administration has extended full support to the MP's proposal to upgrade the public transport system, aiming to match the city's geographical and population growth and ease daily commutes for passengers.
MP Highlights Transport Challenges
In his letter, MP Chowta noted the rapid growth of the city and pointed out that many buses still operate on old, short routes, failing to meet increasing transport needs. He stated, "These outdated routes are also causing financial losses for bus operators. Expanding these routes in line with the changing population is the only logical way to facilitate public convenience and operate the transport system profitably."
Proposed Route Extensions
Considering public feedback and local needs, the MP strongly recommended the expansion of three major bus routes:
- Route No. 5: Proposed extension from Morgans Gate to Jeppinamogaru.
- Route No. 7: Proposed extension from Urwa Store to the Baikampady industrial area, benefiting industrial workers and daily commuters.
- Route No. 13: Proposed extension to the interior of Panambur Beach, providing direct connectivity for domestic and international tourists and local visitors.
The MP opined that these extensions would aid daily commuters like students and employees, and also significantly boost local tourism by providing direct access to major coastal destinations.
Official Action Taken
Taking the matter seriously, the deputy commissioner's office has officially written to the member secretary of the RTA, the deputy transport commissioner, and senior regional transport officials. The district administration has instructed that a comprehensive review of the pros, cons, and feasibility of the three proposed routes be conducted, with necessary recommendations mandatorily presented at the upcoming RTA meeting.
