Mumbai's daily commuters are set to face significant disruption as the Western Railway (WR) has announced a massive cancellation of suburban train services. Approximately 350 trains will be cancelled each day over five key dates, impacting thousands of passengers.
Details of the Rail Block and Cancellations
WR chief spokesperson Vineet Abhishek stated that the cancellations will occur on December 26, 27, 28, 29, and January 10. This schedule translates to a staggering total of up to 1,750 train services being scrapped during this period. The primary reason for this extensive block is the commissioning of new Electronic Interlocking (EI) panels at Borivali station on the Up and Down fast lines.
This work is a critical part of the ongoing project to introduce a 6th railway line in the section between Kandivli and Borivli. Officials confirmed that a 30-day block is in effect from the night of December 20 until January 18 on this stretch. During the peak cancellation days, speed restrictions will also be enforced on the Down fast line, further affecting schedules.
Impact on Commuters and Mitigation Efforts
The large-scale cancellations are expected to reduce the frequency of local trains and cause considerable inconvenience to daily passengers. To manage the fallout, some Borivali and Andheri-bound trains will be terminated at Goregaon instead. Recognising the potential chaos, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking plans to deploy extra buses outside key stations along the Western line to absorb the rush.
Authorities are expediting the work to minimise disruption. A senior official highlighted that special efforts are being made for December 31 to avoid unusual cancellations, ensuring smoother travel for those partaking in New Year celebrations. The current phase represents the final and most intensive stage of the scheduled infrastructure upgrade.
Phased Disruption and Project Timeline
Vineet Abhishek explained that the disruption began gradually. On the first night of the block, December 20/21, only six to seven services were affected. Subsequently, daily cancellations averaged between 70 and 80 trains. However, the five identified days will see the peak impact as the railway executes the last phase of this crucial signalling and line enhancement work. The entire project is slated for completion, with the new 6th line expected to be operational by January 18.
Commuters are strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance, consider alternative travel options, and account for additional travel time during these block periods. The upgrades, once complete, are aimed at enhancing the long-term safety, capacity, and efficiency of Mumbai's vital suburban rail network.
