MBBS Student Drowns in Hooghly River at Kolkata Ghat

A tragic incident occurred in north Kolkata early Saturday morning when a third-year MBBS student from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital drowned in the Hooghly River while bathing at Golabari Ghat. The deceased has been identified as Soham Basak, 23, a resident of Pranab Nagar in Kanaipur under Uttarpara Police Station in Hooghly district.

According to police reports, information was received around 4:45 am that a person had drowned in the river while bathing. Officers immediately rushed to the spot and met Akash Ray, 23, a fellow MBBS student and friend of the deceased. Ray told police that he and Basak, both students of the same college, had arrived at the ghat around 4 am. After spending some time there, they decided to take a bath in the river. Ray stated that he made every effort to save his friend but was unsuccessful.

Basak was swept away by the strong currents and was later rescued during a search operation. He was declared dead on arrival at the same medical college where he studied. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigations are underway.
