Mescom, the electricity supply company in Karnataka, has reported a significant financial loss of Rs 11.73 crore due to the recent pre-monsoon rains and strong winds. The adverse weather conditions caused extensive damage to power infrastructure, including poles, transformers, and conductors, leading to the substantial financial setback.
Worst-Affected Districts
The districts that bore the brunt of the damage were Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada. In these regions, the combination of heavy rainfall and gusty winds led to widespread disruptions in power supply and extensive repairs. The company had to deploy additional teams to restore electricity and replace damaged equipment, which added to the overall costs.
Impact on Power Infrastructure
The pre-monsoon weather conditions resulted in the uprooting of electric poles, snapping of wires, and damage to transformers. Mescom officials stated that the restoration work was challenging due to the continuous rain and wind, which hampered repair activities. The company incurred expenses not only for repairs but also for overtime wages for workers and logistics.
Mescom has urged the state government for financial assistance to cover the losses and has also appealed to consumers for patience as they work to stabilize the power network. The company is taking measures to strengthen the infrastructure to withstand such weather events in the future.
