Mumbai: Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have signed a concession agreement for the first phase of a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Mankhurd. The agreement, signed on June 1, marks the formal commencement of project implementation for the facility, which will have a processing capacity of 350 tonnes per day (TPD).
Project Details
Under the project, municipal organic waste sourced exclusively from designated hotels, vegetable markets, and kitchen waste generators across the city will be processed to produce renewable compressed biogas. This initiative aims to convert organic waste into a valuable energy resource, reducing landfill burden and greenhouse gas emissions.
Official Statement
“The signing of the Concession Agreement marks the commencement of project implementation activities, paving the way for the establishment of one of the city’s key green energy initiatives,” said Mahanagar Gas Ltd in a post on social media platform X. The company emphasized that this project aligns with the city’s sustainability goals and promotes circular economy principles.
Significance
The CBG plant is expected to process organic waste from various sources, including hotels, vegetable markets, and kitchen waste generators. By converting waste into biogas, the project will help reduce methane emissions from landfills and provide a renewable energy source. The biogas can be used as a transportation fuel or for industrial applications, contributing to cleaner air and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.
Implementation Timeline
With the agreement now signed, project implementation activities will begin immediately. The plant is expected to be operational within the next few years, pending necessary clearances and construction milestones. MGL and BMC will work together to ensure timely completion and adherence to environmental standards.
