India and Italy have significantly strengthened their strategic partnership following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome. The discussions marked a major milestone in bilateral relations, with both nations committing to deeper cooperation in defence, technology, and economic corridors.
Key Outcomes of the Talks
MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George announced that both countries signed a Joint Declaration of Intent and an industrial roadmap to promote defence industrial cooperation, technology partnership, and co-production of defence equipment. The agreement focuses on aerospace systems, naval platforms, and next-generation defence technologies, paving the way for joint development and manufacturing.
Focus on Defence and Technology
The leaders emphasized collaboration in critical areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and space technology. They also agreed to enhance cooperation in critical minerals, innovation, education, and culture, alongside people-to-people ties. This comprehensive approach aims to build a resilient and future-oriented partnership.
Support for IMEC
Both Prime Ministers reaffirmed their support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), describing it as a transformational project for global trade and connectivity. IMEC is expected to reduce transit times and costs, boosting economic integration across continents.
Trade Targets
India and Italy set an ambitious target to raise bilateral trade to Euro 20 billion by 2029. This follows the conclusion of India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations earlier this year, which is expected to further liberalize trade and investment flows.
Condemnation of Terrorism
The two sides strongly condemned terrorism and violent extremism, including cross-border terrorism. They called for concerted global action to eliminate safe havens and disrupt terrorist networks.
The Rome talks are widely seen as a major step in expanding India-Italy strategic and economic engagement, building on the momentum of recent high-level exchanges. The joint declaration and industrial roadmap are expected to unlock new opportunities for businesses and industries in both countries.
