Mumbai AC locals see 1.5 crore passengers in 5 months; ridership soars 49%

Mumbai’s air-conditioned local trains are witnessing an unprecedented surge in demand, with over 1.5 crore passengers travelling between January and May 2026. This sharp increase underscores a growing preference among commuters for faster, cooler, and more comfortable travel, especially as summer temperatures soar and non-AC trains remain overcrowded.

Ridership jumps nearly 50%

Between January 26 and May 20, 2026, the average daily ridership on Central Railway’s AC locals rose from approximately 87,500 passengers in 2025 to over 1.3 lakh commuters in 2026 — a remarkable 49% increase in just one year. Railway officials note that AC locals are no longer seen as a luxury but are rapidly becoming the preferred daily travel option for thousands.

More services, yet trains remain packed

Despite Central Railway increasing the number of AC services from 6,834 to 8,991 this year, trains continue to operate with high occupancy. The average number of passengers per service has climbed from 1,474 last year to 1,664 this year, indicating that demand is outpacing capacity on several busy suburban corridors.

Harbour Line expansion triggers massive rush

The most significant surge followed the introduction of 14 additional AC services on the Harbour Line. Passenger numbers on this route skyrocketed from 2.3 lakh between April 16–30 to nearly 3.4 lakh in the subsequent fortnight — a staggering 65% spike that surprised even railway officials.

Commuters willing to pay more for comfort

The AC local boom has also translated into record earnings for Central Railway. Daily average revenue has jumped from ₹38.5 lakh last year to nearly ₹56 lakh this year, with total earnings crossing ₹64 crore in under five months. Officials highlight that commuters are increasingly choosing reliable air-conditioned travel over exhausting journeys in packed non-AC trains.

108 AC services daily

Central Railway now operates 108 AC local services every day, including 80 on the Main Line and 28 on the Harbour Line. These services form a crucial part of Mumbai’s massive suburban railway network, which runs nearly 1,820 local train services daily across AC and non-AC categories.

Summer heat and overcrowding drive shift

Railway officials attribute the shift to multiple factors: intense summer temperatures, overcrowding in regular trains, safer travel conditions, and faster commuting. Many office-goers travelling long distances from suburbs now view AC locals as a practical daily necessity rather than an occasional indulgence.

AC local revolution only getting bigger

The sustained rise in occupancy through March and May proves that commuter demand is only growing stronger. With every new AC service quickly filling up, officials believe Mumbai’s suburban network is witnessing a major transformation — where air-conditioned local trains are becoming the future of everyday commuting in the city.
