Two months after the work order was issued, construction of the NIMHANS-model hospital and de-addiction centre in Mysuru has not yet begun. The delay is attributed to ongoing protests from local farmers' leaders and environmentalists.
Background of the project
The hospital is planned under the Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMC & RI) and is intended to provide mental health and de-addiction services similar to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru. The project was expected to address the growing need for mental healthcare in the region.
Reasons for the delay
According to sources, local farmers and environmental activists have raised concerns over the proposed site. They argue that the land chosen for the hospital is fertile agricultural land and its conversion could harm the local ecosystem. Protests have been ongoing for weeks, preventing any construction activity from commencing.
Officials from MMC & RI stated that they are in talks with the protestors to resolve the issue. However, no concrete solution has been reached yet. The delay has raised questions about the project's timeline and whether it will meet its original completion date.
The state government has also been urged to intervene and find an alternative location if necessary. Meanwhile, advocates for the project emphasize the urgent need for such a facility in Mysuru, citing rising cases of substance abuse and mental health disorders.
Environmentalists have suggested conducting a thorough environmental impact assessment before proceeding. They also demand that compensation be provided to affected farmers. The farmers' leaders have threatened to escalate the protests if their demands are not met.
Despite the hurdles, the health department remains optimistic. A senior official said that the project is a priority and that every effort will be made to start construction soon. The hospital is expected to have 300 beds and offer outpatient services, inpatient care, and rehabilitation programs.
Local residents have mixed reactions. Some support the protests, citing environmental concerns, while others believe the hospital is crucial for the community's well-being. The standoff continues, with no immediate resolution in sight.
This delay highlights the challenges of balancing development with environmental and agricultural interests. It also underscores the need for better communication between authorities and local stakeholders before projects are launched.
