Major Travel Time Reduction for Char Dham Pilgrims
Residents of Gurugram and the broader National Capital Region (NCR) are set to benefit from a transformative infrastructure upgrade that will drastically cut travel time to the Char Dham pilgrimage sites. The integration of the proposed Namo Bharat extension and the under-construction Rishikesh–Karnaprayag rail line is expected to reduce the journey from the NCR to the Himalayan foothills to just 5–6 hours, according to a Tribune News Service report.
Two Landmark Projects Driving the Change
The travel time reduction is being enabled by two major projects. The first is the proposed 150-km extension of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) from Modipuram in Meerut to Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh. This corridor, designed for speeds of up to 160 km/h, has received in-principle approval and will bypass congested road routes, providing faster and more reliable connectivity for pilgrims from Gurugram, Faridabad, and other NCR areas through integrated transit hubs in Delhi.
The second is the under-construction Rishikesh–Karnaprayag rail line, an ambitious mountain railway project featuring 17 tunnels and 35 bridges. Expected to be completed by late 2028, this line will serve as the vital link between the plains and the deeper Himalayan terrain, reducing travel time for that leg from over 6 hours to just 2 to 2.5 hours.
Projected Time Savings
According to the report, the current travel time from Delhi NCR to Rishikesh is 5–6 hours, which will be cut to 2.5–3 hours. The Rishikesh to Karnaprayag segment, currently taking 5–6 hours, will be reduced to 2–2.5 hours. Overall, the total journey from NCR to Karnaprayag will shrink from 11–13 hours to just 5–6 hours, saving more than 7 hours.
Impact on Pilgrims and Regional Economy
This connectivity overhaul will replace time-consuming road journeys with semi-high-speed rail travel, simplifying the spiritual journey for millions of pilgrims. Additionally, it is expected to significantly boost regional tourism and economic development in Uttarakhand. The projects promise to make the Char Dham yatra more accessible and comfortable for NCR residents.
