After enduring intense heatwave conditions for several days, North India is finally set to receive much-needed respite as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall across the region until June 13. The rain is expected to bring down temperatures significantly, providing relief to millions of residents.
IMD Forecast Details
According to the IMD, a western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region, leading to scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Additionally, isolated to scattered rainfall is expected over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for several districts, advising residents to stay cautious.
Temperature Drop Expected
The maximum temperatures, which had soared to 45 degrees Celsius in many parts, are likely to drop by 4-6 degrees Celsius over the next few days. The minimum temperatures will also see a slight decrease, making the weather more pleasant. The IMD has stated that no heatwave conditions are likely over North India for the next five days.
Rainfall Intensity and Thunderstorms
The IMD has warned of thunderstorms and lightning accompanying the rain in some areas. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are also expected. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, especially during outdoor activities. The rain will be most intense on June 12 and 13, with some areas receiving heavy downpours.
Impact on Agriculture and Daily Life
The rainfall is a boon for farmers, as it will provide much-needed moisture for crops like paddy and sugarcane. However, excessive rain could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas. Commuters may face delays due to slippery roads and reduced visibility. The IMD has recommended that people avoid parking vehicles under trees and stay indoors during thunderstorms.
Long-Term Outlook
The IMD has indicated that the monsoon is likely to advance further into North India in the coming days. The onset of monsoon over Delhi and surrounding areas is expected around June 15. This will bring sustained rainfall and further lower temperatures. The weather department will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary.
