Pakistan Airstrikes in Afghanistan Kill 13, Taliban Says

Afghanistan reported on Wednesday that Pakistan launched new airstrikes targeting the country, resulting in at least 13 deaths and 14 injuries. The attacks, which struck the Afghan provinces of Khost, Kunar, and Paktika, were announced by Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid. Among the dead were 11 children, one woman, and one elderly man, according to the Taliban.

Background of the Conflict

Pakistan and Afghanistan have been embroiled in months of deadly fighting that has killed hundreds since late February. The hostilities escalated when Afghanistan launched a cross-border attack on Pakistan in retaliation for previous Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghan territory. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of harboring militants, particularly the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which carries out deadly attacks inside Pakistan. The TTP is a separate group but is allied with the Afghan Taliban, which has ruled Afghanistan since seizing power in 2021 during the chaotic withdrawal of US-led troops. Kabul denies these allegations.

No Immediate Acknowledgment from Pakistan

As of now, there has been no official acknowledgment of the strikes from Pakistani authorities. The incident adds to the rising tensions between the two neighboring countries, which have a history of border disputes and mutual accusations of supporting militant groups.
