Grand Welcome Ceremony at Jakarta Airport
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a grand welcome upon his arrival in Jakarta on Tuesday, ahead of his bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The Indian leader was received with traditional Indonesian dance performances and a ceremonial guard of honour at the airport, reflecting the warm ties between the two nations.
Focus on Strategic Partnership
The visit marks a significant step in strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions will cover a wide range of issues including defense, trade, investment, maritime security, and regional cooperation. Modi is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with President Prabowo, followed by delegation-level talks.
Trade and Investment Agreements
During the visit, several agreements are expected to be signed in areas such as digital technology, health, and infrastructure. Bilateral trade between India and Indonesia stood at $38.8 billion in 2023-24, with both sides aiming to enhance economic ties. Indonesia is a key partner in India's Act East policy and the Indo-Pacific region.
Cultural and People-to-People Ties
The Indian diaspora in Indonesia played a key role in the welcome, with community members gathering to greet the Prime Minister. Modi is also expected to address a community event and interact with business leaders from both countries. The visit underscores the deep cultural connections, including the shared heritage of Ramayana and Buddhism.
Regional and Global Cooperation
In addition to bilateral issues, the leaders will discuss regional and global challenges, including the situation in the South China Sea, counter-terrorism, and climate change. Indonesia is a key member of ASEAN, and India seeks to deepen its engagement with the region. The visit is seen as a precursor to the upcoming ASEAN-India Summit.
