Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Jakarta on July 6, 2026, to begin the first leg of a three-nation tour, receiving a rousing welcome from the Indian diaspora. Chants of "Bharat Mata ki jai" and "Modi, Modi" filled the air as community members gathered at the airport, accompanied by a cultural performance.
Warm Reception from Indian Community
Members of the Indian diaspora expressed their excitement ahead of PM Modi's arrival. One attendee said, "This is the first time I will see PM Modi up close. I am super excited." Another added, "We welcome you with affection and love." The Prime Minister's visit, from July 6 to 8, is at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who personally received him at the airport.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
PM Modi stated he was touched by President Prabowo's gesture of welcoming him at the airport. In a post on X, he noted that the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, which has benefited both nations. He said, "During this visit, President Prabowo Subianto and I will hold discussions aimed at adding even more momentum to this partnership across diverse sectors." The leaders will also visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta to enhance cultural linkages.
Grand Ceremonial Welcome
The Prime Minister was accorded a grand welcome, with Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorting his aircraft upon entering Indonesian airspace. This is PM Modi's fourth visit to Indonesia and the first bilateral visit since the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was formalized in May 2018.
Trade and Investment Highlights
Indonesia is India's second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching USD 24.78 billion in the 2025-26 fiscal year. Over 130 Indian enterprises have active investments across various sectors of the Indonesian economy. Critical mineral cooperation is a key focus, as Indonesia holds about 21% of the world's nickel reserves and is a top global producer of copper, bauxite, and tin. The visit aims to strengthen institutional mechanisms and trade channels in this domain.
PM Modi's three-day official visit underscores the commitment to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
