PM Modi to visit Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand from July 8-11

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from July 8 to July 11, 2026, as India continues to deepen its engagement within its maritime neighbourhood under the Act East Policy.

Itinerary and Key Engagements

Addressing a special press briefing, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon outlined the Prime Minister's schedule. Modi will visit Indonesia on July 8 and 9, with the main engagements in Jakarta. He will also visit the cultural centre Jag Jakarta, including the Prambanan temple complex, where India plans to collaborate with Indonesia on conservation work. On July 10, he will be in Melbourne, Australia, to participate in the third India-Australia Annual Summit. The final leg on July 11 will be in New Zealand, making Modi the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country in 40 years.

Focus on Maritime Cooperation and Act East Policy

Tandon highlighted that the recent focus on the Western Indian Ocean, with Modi's visits to Mauritius and Seychelles, now shifts to the eastern maritime zones. The visit underscores the importance of Indonesia in securing the Malacca Straits, critical for India's security and stability. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established during Modi's 2018 visit to Indonesia remains a key pillar of India's Act East policy and the MAHASAGAR vision.

"Indonesia is also a key country within the ASEAN grouping that has been playing collectively a very important role in strengthening the rule-based order in this zone," Tandon said.

Review of Bilateral Ties with Indonesia

In Indonesia, the leaders will review bilateral relations across all aspects, including maritime cooperation, defence, trade, economic ties, and people-to-people connections. This visit continues the conversation that began when President Prabowo visited India as the guest of honour for the 75th Republic Day celebrations in 2025.

India-Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne

In Melbourne, Modi will attend the third India-Australia Annual Summit, an apex institutional mechanism under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement of 2020. Discussions will cover emerging areas such as cybersecurity, supply chain resilience, and emerging technologies.

Historic Visit to New Zealand

Modi's visit to New Zealand is historic as it marks the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit in four decades. He will hold talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, building on the positive momentum from Luxon's visit to India in 2025, where he was the guest of honour at the Raisina Dialogue.
