Court Verdict in 2017 Suitcase Murder Case
A Mohali court has sentenced Seerat Kaur to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 90,000 after convicting her of murdering her husband, Ekam Singh Dhillon, and conspiring to eliminate him in a 2017 case. The judgment was delivered on July 3, 2026, by the court of Additional Sessions Judge, Mohali.
Dhillon, a resident of Phase 3B1, was found shot dead, with his body packed inside a suitcase placed in the boot of a BMW car, on March 19, 2017. The discovery led to a high-profile investigation and subsequent trial.
Background of the Case
Complainant Darshan Singh Dhillon, a builder and the victim’s father, stated that his elder son had been living separately with his wife of 10 years in Chandigarh along with their two children, aged 11 and 5. The family had later shifted to a house in Phase 3B1, where they had been staying for about 8 to 10 days before the incident.
The complainant further alleged that Ekam was involved in the commercial property business and had purchased properties near Gurgaon and Mullanpur worth around Rs 4 crore to Rs 5 crore, which were registered in the name of his mother-in-law. He alleged that the sale proceeds were lying in her bank account and accused Seerat Kaur, her mother Jaswinder Kaur, and her brother Vinay Pratap Singh of conspiring to murder Ekam to usurp his money and properties. He further alleged that after the murder, they attempted to dispose of the body by placing it inside a suitcase and keeping it in the boot of the car.
Evidence and Conviction
Counsel Terminder Singh said, “Based on CCTV footage of the house and statement of autorickshaw driver Tull Bahadur who stated that he was asked by Seerat to help her put the suitcase in the car, blood was oozing out of the suitcase.” This evidence proved crucial in establishing Seerat Kaur's involvement.
Police had registered a case under Sections 302, 120B and 201 of the IPC, along with provisions of the Arms Act, at Mataur police station on March 19, 2017. Seerat Kaur is currently lodged in jail, serving her life sentence. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 90,000, which will be paid to the victim's family as compensation.
