CEO Orders Door-to-Door Enumeration

Karnataka's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has directed Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to conduct door-to-door enumeration across the state as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The move comes amid allegations from the opposition that large numbers of Bangladeshi immigrants are being enrolled as voters.

Opposition Claims 'Mass Enrolment'

Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka claimed that there were 20 lakh Bangladeshis in Karnataka. 'The Congress is building a special highway for them', he added, accusing the ruling party of facilitating their inclusion in voter lists. The BJP and JD(S) have raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral rolls.

BLOs Tasked with Verification

As part of the SIR, BLOs will visit every household to verify existing voters and enrol new eligible voters. The CEO emphasized the need for thorough verification to ensure accuracy and prevent any fraudulent entries.

Political Reactions

The opposition parties have demanded that the Election Commission investigate the alleged mass enrolment. The Congress government has dismissed the allegations as baseless, stating that the SIR is a routine exercise to update electoral rolls.
