At least six people were killed after a severe storm and strong winds battered several districts of Uttar Pradesh early Friday, according to the relief commissioner's office. Officials reported one death each in Pratapgarh, Shahjahanpur, and Fatehpur, while three people died in Kaushambi. In addition to these six fatalities, six workers lost their lives when a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed due to gusty winds in Hamirpur.
State Response and Rescue Operations
The state administration launched an assessment of the damage caused by the storm across affected districts. Emergency response teams were deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations, while local authorities monitored the situation and extended assistance to affected families.
Record Wind Speeds Recorded
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded exceptionally high wind speeds in several parts of the state during the night. Hamirpur's Sumerpur Polytechnic College reported the highest wind speed at 122 kmph. Jalaun's Orai tehsil recorded gusts of 118 kmph, while Banda registered wind speeds of 111 kmph at the Circuit House and 100 kmph in Pailani. Mirzapur also recorded winds touching 100 kmph.
Western Uttar Pradesh Affected
In western Uttar Pradesh, wind speeds reached 109 kmph in Hathras' Jahangirpur village and 100 kmph in Etmadpur, Agra. The severe weather has caused widespread damage, and authorities are continuing to assess the situation.
