Palanpur: Six women were killed and eight others sustained injuries when a private bus collided with their van on National Highway-48 near Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district on Wednesday. The incident occurred around midday, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.
Details of the Accident
The women were part of a catering team that provided services for social events. They were traveling from Sardoi village in Modasa to Hunj village near Himmatnagar, according to police reports. Deputy Superintendent of Police A K Patel stated, "Inspection of the accident spot suggests that the Eco van driver might have tried to take a turn from a cut on the highway when the bus hit the vehicle from behind."
Victims Identified
The deceased were identified as Shakri Nayak, Kanta Ninama, Hetal Nayak, and Sarla Bhoi, all residents of Sardoli village in Modasa district. Additionally, Meena Bhoi and Ashika Nayak, from Moyad village near Prantij in Sabarkantha, lost their lives in the crash.
Injured and Medical Response
The injured individuals were rushed to the Himmatnagar civil hospital for treatment. Dr. Dhrupad Chauhan, the hospital's medical officer, reported that two of the injured were in critical condition and were receiving intensive care. The remaining six were stable but under observation.
Police Action and Safety Concerns
Authorities have taken note of the unauthorized cuts on the highway, which drivers often use as shortcuts. Patel added that the police have verbally communicated with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to close these dangerous openings to prevent future accidents.
