SW Monsoon Likely Early in Jharkhand This Year

Ranchi: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announcing the official onset of monsoon likely around May 26 earlier this week, Met officials in Ranchi expressed optimism on Saturday that the southwest monsoon could arrive early in Jharkhand if weather conditions remain favorable.

Monsoon Progress and Forecast

According to an IMD statement, the southwest monsoon has already advanced into parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, many parts of the Andaman Sea, the entire Nicobar Islands, and some parts of the Andaman Islands.

Baburaj PP, scientist and head of the Meteorological Department in Ranchi, told the Times of India on Saturday that the arrival of the monsoon could be delayed in case of unusual weather activity, such as a cyclone.

The southwest monsoon typically hits Kerala around June 1 and takes approximately 12 days to enter Jharkhand through Sahibganj, explained Abhishek Anand, scientist and deputy director of the Ranchi Met office. He added, "Therefore, going by calculations, this year, though the official date of monsoon arrival is June 15 in Ranchi, rains may hit Jharkhand as early as the first week of June."
