Taiwan's defense ministry announced on Wednesday that it detected 12 sorties of Chinese aircraft and five vessels operating around its territory. Among these, four Chinese aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, a de facto boundary that Beijing does not recognize.
Details of the Incursions
The aircraft sorties included various types of military planes, such as fighter jets and surveillance aircraft. The vessels identified were primarily naval ships and coast guard vessels. The median line has historically been an unofficial dividing line, but China has increasingly challenged it in recent years.
Taiwan's Response
Taiwan's air force responded by scrambling its own aircraft and deploying air defense systems to monitor the situation. The defense ministry stated that it remains vigilant and will take necessary measures to ensure the security of its airspace and territorial waters.
These activities come amid heightened tensions between China and Taiwan, with Beijing asserting its claims over the island and increasing military pressure. China views Taiwan as a renegade province and has vowed to reunify it with the mainland, by force if necessary.
The international community, particularly the United States, has expressed concern over China's military activities near Taiwan. The U.S. has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region and continues to support Taiwan's self-defense capabilities under the Taiwan Relations Act.
