A woman and her former partner were killed in a powerful explosion after the man allegedly forced his way into her home carrying an explosive device in Bristol, police said, in a case now being treated as homicide.
Incident Details
Officers were called to a domestic incident at a property on Sterncourt Road in Frenchay early Sunday morning. A caller reported that a man known to them had forced entry into the house, and minutes later warned he was believed to be carrying an explosive device. At around 6:32 am, a blast ripped through the property, according to Sky News citing police.
Victims Identified
The victims were identified as 35-year-old Jo Shaw and her 41-year-old ex-partner Ryan Kelly. While both died from their injuries, police have confirmed Shaw’s death is being treated as a homicide based on current findings. Authorities have also stated they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the case.
Injuries and Evacuations
Three others, including a child, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, though most residents were later allowed to return. Emergency services, including bomb disposal experts, carried out extensive searches to secure the area.
Police Investigation
Police revealed there had been prior contact with the victim related to domestic incidents, prompting a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Specially trained officers are supporting the victim’s family. Officials stressed the explosion is believed to have been deliberate but is not being treated as terrorism-related. Investigations remain ongoing, with forensic analysis of the device yet to be completed.
