Chennai: State sports minister Aadhav Arjuna on Wednesday asked the Union government to permit Tamil Nadu to host the 2029 National Games. Aadhav called on Union minister for youth affairs and sports Mansukh Mandaviya in Delhi and submitted a memorandum highlighting the state’s track record of hosting major national and international events.
Infrastructure and Sporting Ecosystem
He said Tamil Nadu hosting the 2029 National Games “would create a lasting infrastructure legacy and boost the state’s sporting ecosystem.” He added that Tamil Nadu has a 1,076-km coastline, making it suitable for setting up a national centre of excellence for beach sports in Nagapattinam district, which is known for its unique coastal landscape and availability of local talent.
Proposals for Cycling and Khelo India
Aadhav also requested setting up of an international standard indoor cycling velodrome and a national cycling high-performance centre in Coimbatore. He urged the Centre to expand the Khelo India ecosystem by setting up centres across the state such that at least two priority sports disciplines are covered in every single district.
