Thunderstorm Causes Rs 74 Lakh Loss in Karnal, Damages 194 Poles
Thunderstorm in Karnal: 194 Poles, 85 Transformers Damaged

A severe thunderstorm lashed Karnal district in Haryana on Tuesday evening, causing extensive damage to the power infrastructure. According to officials from the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), the storm resulted in the damage of 194 electricity poles and 85 transformers, leading to a financial loss of approximately Rs 74 lakh.

Extent of Damage

The storm, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, uprooted trees and disrupted power supply in several areas. The damaged poles and transformers have left many localities without electricity. UHBVN officials stated that the worst-affected areas include the city center, industrial zones, and some rural pockets. The estimated loss includes the cost of replacing the poles, repairing transformers, and restoring the power network.

Restoration Efforts Underway

Following the storm, UHBVN deployed multiple teams to assess the damage and initiate restoration work. Engineers and linemen have been working round the clock to replace damaged poles and repair transformers. Officials assured that power supply would be restored in most areas within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the severity of the damage. Priority is being given to essential services such as hospitals and water supply stations.

Impact on Daily Life

The power outage has affected daily life, with residents facing difficulties in carrying out routine activities. Many businesses, especially those reliant on electricity, have suffered losses. Schools and colleges in the affected areas reported disruptions due to the lack of power. Local authorities have urged residents to remain patient and avoid approaching damaged electrical equipment.

Weather Advisory

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a warning for thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of Haryana. Officials advise residents to stay indoors during such weather events and report any damage to power infrastructure to the nearest UHBVN office. The department continues to monitor the situation and has assured prompt action in case of further incidents.

Previous Incidents

Karnal has experienced similar weather-related damage in the past. In 2023, a series of thunderstorms had caused widespread disruption to power supply, prompting the district administration to review the resilience of the power grid. The recurring incidents highlight the need for strengthening infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

UHBVN has initiated a detailed assessment of the damage and will submit a report to the state government for compensation and future preventive measures. The corporation is also exploring options to underground power lines in vulnerable areas to minimize damage from storms.
