Idukki: Concerns are escalating over the potential threat posed by a tiger released in the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) to nearby human settlements. The animal was captured after it created panic in residential areas of Munnar and subsequently released into the forest region.
Forest Officials Intensify Monitoring
Forest officials have ramped up monitoring efforts to prevent the tiger from straying back into populated areas and attacking people or livestock. The tiger was released on April 2 in the Gavi area under the Vallakkadavu range. Despite being released deep inside the forest, the animal reportedly moved out of its habitat, raising serious concerns for the forest department.
A special team has been conducting a search for the five-year-old tiger for the past week, but it has not yet been located. Officials suspect that the tiger may still be near human settlements. Cage traps have been set up as part of efforts to recapture the animal.
Search Operations Underway
Search operations are currently underway in several areas, including Kumily tribal colony, Kurisumala, Mullayar, Thondiyar, and parts of the Vallakkadavu range under the Thekkady region. The tiger is believed to be the same one that had previously killed around 20 domestic animals, including goats and cattle, in Marayur. Authorities fear that if it re-enters populated areas, similar incidents could occur again.
