The long-awaited tiger safari at the Ludhiana zoo reopened to the public on Tuesday following a year-and-a-half closure. The major attraction of the reopening is a new pair of big cats—a tiger named Badal and a tigress named Bijli—who were officially released into the safari enclosure.
Timings and Entry Fees
The zoo operates six days a week, opening from Tuesday to Sunday between 9am and 5pm. To experience the newly restored attraction, visitors need to pay an entry fee of Rs 50 per person for the tiger safari, while access to the entire zoo is priced at Rs 20 for children and Rs 30 for adults.
New Tigers from Nagpur
The two tigers were brought to Ludhiana from a Nagpur-based zoological park in the first week of May. Zoo In-charge Narinder Singh stated that visitors frequently inquired about the tigers during the safari’s closure, and officials are now also hoping the pair will mate. In addition to the newly released tigers, the Ludhiana zoo houses a variety of wildlife, including two leopards, deer, and sambhar.
Nagpur Solved Ludhiana’s Big Cat Vacancy
The Ludhiana zoo was forced to shut down its popular tiger safari in December 2024 after the death of its lone tiger, Aman. Following the loss, wildlife officials actively sought a new pair of tigers under the national animal exchange programme. The authorities approached the Nagpur facility because it had a surplus of tigers. Once the Nagpur zoological park consented to the transfer, the Ludhiana zoo authorities secured the mandatory final approval from the Central Zoo Authority to transport the big cats.
