Trump Meets Macron in France Ahead of G7 Summit

US President Donald Trump met French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday in Evian, France, shortly after arriving for the 52nd G7 Summit. The meeting took place in the scenic resort town of Évian-les-Bains, following a major diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East.

Trump's Arrival in France

Trump arrived in Geneva before heading to Évian-les-Bains. The recently announced peace deal with Iran is expected to be a key topic of discussion at the summit. Trump briefly addressed reporters, saying, "Everything is very nice," and waved before departing.

The G7 Summit, hosted by France, runs from June 15 to 17. It brings together leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union, which has been part of the group since 1981.

Delegation and Agenda

Trump flew overnight from Washington aboard Air Force One, accompanied by key officials including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Ambassadors Jamieson Greer and Monica Crowley, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino. Others on board included Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Beau Harrison, Communications Director Steven Cheung, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and Policy Planning Director Michael A. Needham. White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf, Speechwriting Director Ross Worthington, and Oval Office Operations Director Walt Nauta were also present.

According to CNN, Trump aimed to have a framework for the Iran peace deal in place before meeting European leaders at the summit. This follows Trump's early departure from the 2025 G7 meeting in Canada due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. At that time, the White House cited the Middle East situation as the reason for his early return.

Iran Deal and Security Concerns

Trump previously stated that Iran was "at the negotiating table" and expressed confidence in reaching a deal. He also issued a warning on Truth Social for everyone to evacuate Tehran, though no reason was provided. Days later, US warplanes bombed three nuclear sites in Iran. On Sunday, Trump announced that the deal with Iran was "complete" and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen following the signing of the agreement on Friday.

G7 Summit Agenda

The 52nd G7 Summit began on Monday in Evian, focusing on pressing economic imbalances, geopolitical tensions, and global governance. French President Emmanuel Macron set the agenda in a video address, highlighting regional crises, global trade imbalances, and cybersecurity. He confirmed the participation of core G7 members and announced outreach to partner countries including South Korea, India, Kenya, Brazil, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates.

India's participation marks its 13th appearance as a partner country, underscoring its growing global influence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend for the seventh consecutive time. The summit discussions will cover macroeconomic governance, international financial architecture, global health, energy security, and West Asian geopolitics, particularly the nuclear agreement with Iran.
