The United Nations and its partner organizations have launched an appeal for USD 710.5 million to meet the critical needs of Rohingya refugees residing in Bangladesh. This funding is essential to provide life-saving assistance, including food, shelter, healthcare, and protection services for the nearly one million Rohingya who fled persecution in Myanmar.
Urgent Humanitarian Needs
The appeal comes as the refugee crisis enters its seventh year, with conditions worsening due to funding shortfalls and the impact of climate change. The Rohingya remain heavily reliant on humanitarian aid, with many living in overcrowded camps in Cox's Bazar district. The UN emphasizes that without immediate funding, essential services such as nutrition programs, education, and sanitation could face severe disruptions.
Key Areas of Focus
- Food Security: Providing nutritious meals to prevent malnutrition, especially among children and pregnant women.
- Shelter and Non-Food Items: Ensuring safe and adequate housing, along with basic household items.
- Healthcare: Supporting clinics and hospitals to address both routine and emergency medical needs, including mental health services.
- Protection: Safeguarding vulnerable groups, including women and children, from violence and exploitation.
- Education: Offering learning opportunities for refugee children, many of whom have been out of school for years.
Call for International Support
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, stressed that the international community must not forget the Rohingya. He stated that sustained support is crucial to prevent a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation. The appeal also aims to strengthen the resilience of host communities in Bangladesh, which have generously opened their doors despite limited resources.
The USD 710.5 million target is part of the Joint Response Plan (JRP) for the Rohingya humanitarian crisis. In 2024, the JRP seeks a total of USD 852 million, with this appeal covering the most immediate needs. Donors are urged to contribute generously to avert a potential catastrophe.
