Brisbane Woman Wakes to Find 2.5m Python on Her Chest in Bed
Ordinary nights sometimes deliver extraordinary surprises. A quiet home in Brisbane became the setting for a startling wildlife encounter. Rachel Bloor experienced this firsthand when she woke up to find something completely unexpected resting on her chest.
A Heavy Weight in the Dark
Rachel Bloor was deep asleep when she suddenly felt a heavy weight pressing down on her body. Still half asleep, she moved her hand instinctively. She thought her dog had jumped onto the bed for some nighttime company.
Instead of soft fur, her fingers touched something smooth and distinctly moving. That was the moment reality snapped into focus. This was no ordinary night.
"Don't move," her partner whispered urgently beside her. According to a BBC report, Bloor froze immediately. She pulled the blanket closer as her partner reached for the bedside lamp.
The Shocking Revelation
Light flooded the room, revealing the source of the weight. Her partner saw it first and spoke with careful control.
"He goes, 'Oh baby. Don't move. There's like a 2.5m python on you,'" Bloor later told the BBC.
Shock hit her instantly. But her fear quickly extended beyond herself. Her thoughts raced to the two dogs also in the room.
"I thought if my Dalmatian realises that there's a snake there... It's gonna be carnage," she explained.
They acted fast. The dogs were ushered out of the bedroom immediately. Her husband, visibly shaken, admitted he wished he could leave with them.
A Calm and Careful Escape
With the dogs safe, Bloor focused on her own escape. The room fell quiet again. She concentrated on staying perfectly calm.
"I was just trying to shimmy out from under the covers... in my mind, going, 'Is this really happening? This is so bizarre'," she recalled.
The BBC report notes she believes the carpet python entered through the window shutters. The non-venomous snake likely slithered onto the bed while she slept. Once she had carefully freed herself, she began gently guiding the large reptile back toward the same opening.
Handling a Giant Visitor
Despite its impressive size, the python remained surprisingly passive. Bloor described its behavior as calm.
"It was that big that even though it had been curled up on me, part of its tail was still out the shutter," she said.
She even handled the snake directly during the removal. "I grabbed him, and even then, he didn't seem overly freaked out. He sort of just wobbled in my hand."
Her husband watched the scene, stunned. Bloor, however, maintained her composure throughout. She credits her calm demeanor to growing up around snakes.
"I think if you're calm, they're calm," she stated simply.
A Safe Conclusion to a Strange Night
The incident concluded without any injuries. Both people and animals emerged completely unharmed, as confirmed by the BBC.
Carpet pythons are constrictors commonly found along Australia's coastal regions. They are non-venomous and typically hunt small animals like birds.
For Rachel Bloor, the night transformed from routine to utterly unforgettable. What began as a peaceful sleep ended as a remarkable story of unexpected wildlife and remarkable calm.
