Forest officials discovered an abandoned elephant calf in the Shyampur range of Haridwar forest division on Sunday. The calf was later transferred to an elephant rescue centre located in the Chilla range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve. Veterinarians are now closely monitoring the young animal's condition.
Routine Patrol Leads to Discovery
During a regular morning patrol, the forest team spotted the infant calf in the Khara belt. Officials initially waited for the herd to return and reclaim the calf. However, no elephants appeared for several hours.
Immediate Veterinary Response
Divisional Forest Officer Anirudh Swapnil described the scene. He said the calf was motionless when first found. A veterinarian rushed to the site immediately. The medical professional traced the calf's heartbeat and administered first aid.
After evaluating the situation, the forest team moved the calf to the rescue centre in the evening. The animal has started drinking milk. Its condition is currently stable.
Critical Observation Period Ahead
The calf will remain under observation for the next month. DFO Swapnil emphasized this period is crucial for the animal's survival. He explained such incidents are not uncommon in forest areas.
Possible Reasons for Abandonment
Swapnil discussed potential reasons for the abandonment. Herds sometimes leave calves if they perceive little chance of survival. First-time mothers may lack the necessary experience. The herd might also move away due to a perceived threat.
The exact reason for this calf being left behind remains undetermined. Officials waited hours for the herd's return. When that did not happen, they decided to shift the calf to safety.
Forest department personnel continue their vigilant monitoring at the rescue centre. They hope the calf will recover fully under professional care.
