An environmental activist has flagged the alarming disappearance of green cover along the Jalandhar-Phagwara road stretch. The activist, who has been monitoring the area for years, pointed out that numerous trees have been cut down or have died due to neglect, leaving the stretch barren and exposed.
Activist Raises Concerns
The activist, speaking to local media, emphasized that the green cover along this crucial road has significantly diminished over the past few years. He noted that the absence of trees not only affects the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to rising pollution levels and soil erosion. The stretch, once lined with lush trees, now presents a stark and dusty landscape.
Impact on Environment and Commuters
The loss of green cover has multiple repercussions. Environmentally, it reduces air quality, increases heat, and disrupts local biodiversity. For commuters, the lack of shade makes travel uncomfortable, especially during summer months. The activist urged the forest department and local authorities to conduct a survey and initiate a large-scale plantation drive to restore the greenery.
He also pointed out that many of the trees that remain are in poor health, suffering from lack of water and care. He called for regular maintenance and protection of existing trees, along with planting of native species that require less water and are more resilient.
Authorities Yet to Respond
As of now, no official response has been received from the forest department or the municipal corporation. The activist has submitted a written complaint and is awaiting action. He has also appealed to local residents and organizations to join hands in preserving and enhancing the green cover in the region.
The Jalandhar-Phagwara road is a major arterial route, and its greening is essential for environmental sustainability and public well-being. The activist hopes that the authorities will act promptly to address this issue before the situation worsens.
