Andhra Pradesh Grapples with Scorching Heatwave as Anantapur Tops 44 Degrees Celsius

The Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh is currently enduring a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring well above normal levels. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Anantapur recorded a blistering maximum temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday, which is approximately 4°C higher than the seasonal average. This reading marked the highest temperature in the entire state for that day, highlighting the intensity of the heatwave.

Rayalaseema Dominates State's Hottest Spots

Alongside Anantapur, three other locations in the Rayalaseema region claimed the top positions for the highest maximum temperatures across Andhra Pradesh. Kurnool followed closely with 43.4°C, while Kadapa registered 42.9°C and Nandyal recorded 42.6°C. Tirupati also experienced significant heat, reaching 40.4°C. This concentration of extreme temperatures underscores the regional impact of the heatwave, particularly in Rayalaseema.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh Battles Humidity and Heat

In the coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP) region, temperatures were slightly lower but still oppressive due to high humidity levels. Jangamaheswarapuram in Palnadu district recorded the highest coastal temperature at 40.5°C. Other notable readings included 39.6°C in Nandigama, 39°C in Amaravati, 38.7°C in Nellore, 38.5°C in Gannavaram, 37.6°C in Kavali, and 37.2°C each in Tuni and Kakinada. The combination of heat and humidity, especially in Vizag where relative humidity ranged from 70 to 80%, caused significant discomfort for residents during peak hours, even with temperatures between 33°C and 34°C.

IMD Issues Weather Forecast and Warnings

The IMD has issued a detailed forecast for the coming days, predicting a mix of thunderstorms and persistent heat. On April 20 and 21, maximum temperatures are expected to remain above normal in the Rayalaseema region. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely in north coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, and Rayalaseema. Additionally, hot and humid conditions are anticipated at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

For April 22 and 23, the forecast indicates continued thunderstorms with lightning in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema, along with hot and humid conditions in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Although coastal districts may see temperatures below 40°C, the high humidity will exacerbate the discomfort for residents over the next two days.

Recent Weather Patterns and Health Advisory

Between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, rainfall occurred at one or two places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, while dry weather prevailed over Rayalaseema. In response to the extreme conditions, the medical and health department has issued crucial advisories to protect public health. Recommendations include avoiding prolonged exposure to heat, wearing lightweight, light-colored, loose cotton clothing, covering the head with wet cloths, hats, or umbrellas when outdoors during peak hours, and drinking sufficient water regularly to prevent dehydration, even if not feeling thirsty.

This comprehensive approach aims to mitigate the risks associated with the ongoing heatwave, ensuring that residents can navigate the challenging weather conditions safely.
