With Cyclone Ditwah rapidly approaching the coastal state of Andhra Pradesh, the state government has initiated a large-scale emergency operation. The primary goal is to shield paddy and dairy farmers, who are still recovering from the devastating impact of Cyclone Montha that struck in late October.
High-Alert: Fast-Tracked Procurement & Protection
The Civil Supplies and Agriculture departments are operating at maximum capacity to ensure the swift procurement and safeguarding of recently harvested crops. Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar addressed the urgency on Tuesday, confirming that the procurement process has been significantly accelerated. He assured the public, "Our effort is to ensure that not a single farmer suffers because of Cyclone Ditwah. Procurement centres are functioning without interruption."
This rapid response is critical for agricultural communities, particularly dairy farmers, who are yet to fully recuperate from the previous cyclone's blow. The situation is especially tense as many farmers had just commenced harvesting and were preparing to sell their Kharif produce when the new cyclone alert was issued.
Targeted Districts and Emergency Measures
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified specific districts that are expected to bear the brunt of Cyclone Ditwah. Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam, and Kurnool are on high alert, causing heightened anxiety across these rural regions.
In response, Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu has outlined a series of emergency actions. A key focus is protecting harvested paddy from potential rain damage through the distribution of tarpaulins and protective sheets at the mandal and district levels. The minister has issued clear instructions to authorities in all vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and provide every possible support to farmers.
To further mitigate risk, the government is deploying additional harvesters to the at-risk districts. This measure aims to help farmers cut standing crops and move them to safer locations at the earliest opportunity.
Financial Security for Farmers
On the procurement front, significant progress has already been made. Civil Supplies Director S Dilli Rao reported that a substantial 9.6 lakh metric tonnes of paddy have already been purchased from farmers. In a move designed to offer immediate financial relief, the government has implemented a rapid payment system for farmers in cyclone-prone zones.
Payments are being deposited directly into farmers' bank accounts within six hours of procurement. This policy is a crucial step in providing immediate financial security to farming families facing the dual threat of natural disaster and economic loss.
As Cyclone Ditwah is forecasted to intensify, the state government's proactive and multi-pronged strategy is providing a much-needed layer of support and relief to the anxious farming communities of Andhra Pradesh.
