Assam's Ambitious Rs 692 Crore Initiative to Restore Maijan Wetland in Dibrugarh
In a significant environmental move, the state of Assam is set to undertake a comprehensive makeover of the Maijan Wetland area in Dibrugarh. This ambitious wetland restoration project, valued at Rs 692 crore, aims to rejuvenate the ecological hotspot and enhance its role in regional flood management.
High-Level Field Inspection Conducted by Officials
On Monday, a detailed field inspection of the wetland area was carried out by L Sweety Changsan, the Chief Executive Officer of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and Additional Chief Secretary. The inspection team included Samujjal Borah, Circle Officer of Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle, along with officials from the Water Resource Department.
During the visit, the team thoroughly examined Maijan Lake and Nagaghuli Ghat. They actively engaged with local representatives, including gaon pradhans, to gain insights into community concerns and expectations regarding the wetland rejuvenation project. This collaborative approach underscores the government's commitment to involving stakeholders in the restoration efforts.
Ecological Significance of Maijan Wetland
Maijan Beel, an oxbow lake situated approximately 12 kilometers from Dibrugarh city, holds a direct connection with the mighty Brahmaputra River. It is positioned at an elevation ranging from 86 to 102 meters above mean sea level. Spanning an area of 44.5 hectares, the water body exhibits depths varying from 3 to 9 meters and is entirely encircled by lush tea gardens.
The wetland boasts remarkable biodiversity, with 54 recorded fish species, 42 types of macrophytes, and a rich phytoplankton community. It serves as a crucial winter habitat for migratory birds and supports a diverse array of flora and fauna, making it a prime destination for birdwatching enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Project Goals and Community Engagement
Samujjal Borah emphasized the dual importance of the rejuvenation project. "The revival of Maijan Lake is not merely an environmental priority but also essential for effective flood management in Dibrugarh. The lake was nearly on the brink of extinction due to pollution and other detrimental factors. This restoration initiative will provide it with a new lease on life," Borah stated.
He further explained, "Rejuvenating wetlands like Maijan is vital for diverting excess floodwaters from the Brahmaputra River. This strategy helps reduce the risk of inundation and erosion in the river basin. We are committed to working closely with ASDMA and local communities to ensure the successful implementation of this project."
Broader Context and National Support
Maijan Lake is one of 16 wetlands across Assam selected for restoration under the National Mitigation Fund. This selection highlights its ecological importance and the state's dedication to preserving its natural heritage. The project aligns with broader environmental conservation goals and aims to set a precedent for sustainable wetland management in the region.
The restoration efforts are expected to not only enhance biodiversity but also boost local tourism and provide economic benefits to surrounding communities. By addressing pollution and improving water quality, the initiative seeks to create a healthier ecosystem that can thrive for generations to come.
