The much-anticipated low-pressure system that had developed over the Bay of Bengal has significantly weakened, according to the latest bulletin from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). While it won't bring the heavy downpours initially anticipated, several coastal districts of West Bengal are still expected to experience some weather activity.
What to Expect in Coastal Areas
The weather system's weakening means residents of Kolkata and surrounding regions can breathe a sigh of relief. Instead of intense rainfall, the forecast now predicts:
- Light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas across coastal districts
- South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas may see scattered showers
- Kolkata could experience brief periods of light rainfall
- Generally partly cloudy skies with intermittent sunshine
IMD's Official Assessment
The meteorological department confirmed that the cyclonic circulation previously observed over the northeast Bay of Bengal has substantially lost strength. The associated trough extending from this system has also become less pronounced, resulting in reduced rainfall intensity across the region.
"The system has weakened considerably since formation," the IMD statement noted. "While it will continue to influence weather patterns, the impact will be significantly milder than earlier projections."
Regional Weather Outlook
Despite the system's weakening, moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal will maintain relatively high humidity levels across coastal West Bengal. Day temperatures are expected to remain near normal seasonal averages, with the occasional showers providing some relief from the typical humid conditions.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue updates if there are any significant changes in the weather pattern. Residents are advised to stay informed about local weather developments, though no severe weather warnings have been issued for the region.
