Bengaluru Endures Second Consecutive Day of Severe Weather
For the second day in a row, hailstorms and thundershowers battered various parts of Bengaluru on Wednesday, offering a much-welcome break from the oppressive heat that has enveloped the city in recent weeks. This sudden meteorological shift, characterized by gusty winds and intense, albeit brief, rainfall, led to a significant drop in daytime temperatures, providing residents with a temporary respite.
Widespread Disruption Across the City
The severe weather conditions caused substantial disruptions, particularly in air travel. At Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), a total of 26 flights were diverted due to the adverse conditions, highlighting the storm's impact on transportation networks.
Numerous localities across Bengaluru experienced heavy thundershowers. Affected areas included Byappanahalli, Bannerghatta Road, Kanakapura Road, JP Nagar, Shanthinagar, Jayanagar, KR Market, Wilson Garden, Richmond Town, Basaveshwara Nagar, and Tumakuru Road. In parts of East and South Bengaluru, hailstones fell for a short period, while rain and thunder activity persisted in many regions until late evening.
Traffic was notably affected near Nelamangala on Tumakuru Road after a large signboard collapsed across the highway, further complicating travel conditions.
Festive Preparations and Commuter Chaos
The unexpected downpour caught many citizens off guard, especially those engaged in last-minute shopping for the Ugadi festival in bustling commercial hubs such as the Central Business District (CBD), Shivajinagar, Commercial Street, Chickpet, and KR Market. The heavy rain disrupted traffic flow on major roads, with waterlogging in several stretches exacerbating congestion.
Many individuals traveling out of the city to their hometowns for Ugadi celebrations found themselves stranded in severe traffic snarls caused by inundated roads, adding to the pre-festival chaos.
Meteorological Forecast and Official Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that thundershowers will continue in isolated parts of Bengaluru over the coming days, accompanied by the possibility of strong winds. Officials have urged residents to exercise caution, particularly during evening hours when weather activity is expected to intensify.
CS Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, explained the meteorological factors behind the severe weather: "There is a north-south trough extending over the interiors of Karnataka, along with a discontinuity of winds. Additionally, all districts have reported scorching heat over the past few days, leading to intense hailstorms at isolated places in north and south-interior Karnataka districts."
This combination of atmospheric conditions has created the perfect storm for the recent weather events, bringing both relief and disruption to India's tech capital.
