The city of Bengaluru is grappling with the severe consequences of a persistent heatwave, as near-record temperatures have placed unprecedented stress on its critical power infrastructure. The intense conditions have led to a rare and significant electrical incident that temporarily disrupted essential water services for residents.

Heat-Induced Flashover at Key Substation

During the exceptionally warm late hours of Tuesday night, a line breaker at the crucial 220 kV Somanahalli substation on the city's outskirts experienced a rare flashover. This substation is vital as it supplies power to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) pumping station. The electrical disturbance briefly cut power to the Cauvery pumping station located at Tataguni, directly impacting water distribution to multiple areas across Bengaluru.

Engineers investigating the incident confirmed that the extreme heat triggered the electrical failure, specifically damaging the B-phase current transformer (CT). This damage resulted in an oil leak at the station. BWSSB sources reported that temperatures at the Somanahalli site had soared to 37 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, creating the perfect conditions for such infrastructure stress.

Unprecedented Incident and Immediate Response

A BWSSB engineer emphasized the unusual nature of this event, stating, "While electrical incidents are common and often unpredictable, this specific type of occurrence due to heat stress has never happened before at this location. Our engineering team responded immediately to address the situation and implement repairs."

A technical official involved in the restoration provided further details: "The incident was caused by damage to the breakers, which failed to detect a fault such as an overload. The flashover created a critical high-voltage arcing situation that posed risks to nearby equipment and personnel. The oil leakage from the compromised CT was a direct result of thermal expansion caused by the surging daytime temperatures during these sizzling summer conditions. However, our personnel acted swiftly to mitigate the intensity of the impact."

Restoration Efforts and Official Statement

The response team successfully isolated the faulty section, safely drained the leaked oil, and replaced the damaged current transformer, according to another BWSSB engineer. BWSSB Chairperson V Ram Prasath Manohar attributed the episode directly to extreme weather conditions.

Manohar explained, "This was an unexpected situation resulting from extreme weather incidents near Tataguni. Nevertheless, our officials and engineers were prompt in their response to the problem. Due to the necessary repair work at the site, Cauvery water supply was affected in parts of the city from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM on Wednesday. Following the completion of repairs, the system was fully restored, and normal water supply has since resumed."

The incident highlights the growing vulnerability of urban infrastructure to climate-induced temperature extremes, particularly in rapidly developing cities like Bengaluru. As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, such events may prompt authorities to reassess the resilience of power and water systems against thermal stress.
