Bhubaneswar Records Scorching 41.2°C, Hottest Day in Two Years

Residents of Bhubaneswar endured an intense heatwave on Wednesday as the mercury soared to a blistering 41.2°C, marking one of the hottest days of this summer season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that this temperature was a significant 3°C above the normal range for the city, representing the highest recorded during the month in the past two years.

Coastal Areas Experience Unprecedented Heat

IMD officials highlighted that coastal pockets of Odisha witnessed temperatures hovering at 40°C or more for the first time this month, with similar spikes observed in western and interior regions of the state. In comparison, the previous highest temperature for April was 39.7°C recorded on April 5, 2025, according to IMD data.

Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre, attributed the sharp rise in mercury levels to the inflow of dry, hot winds from the northwesterly direction. This meteorological phenomenon has significantly impacted not only inland areas but also typically cooler coastal zones, creating widespread discomfort.

Daily Life Disrupted by Extreme Heat

The extreme weather conditions forced many residents to alter their daily routines. Numerous people chose to stay indoors to avoid the punishing heat, while those venturing outside were seen wearing summer caps and covering their heads and faces with cotton cloths for protection.

Most commercial establishments remained closed after 12 noon due to the unbearable conditions. Coinciding with government-declared holidays in the city, school buses and other educational transport were notably absent from roads. Parents opted to take their children for tuition sessions in the afternoon, strategically avoiding the harsher forenoon heat.

"I usually use my motorcycle to buy small essential items from the nearby market. But on Wednesday, I couldn't brave the heat and took my car out instead. One risks sunstroke if exposed to this heat while riding a motorcycle. Unless traveling in an air-conditioned vehicle, fatigue is almost certain. The heat was literally pinching the skin," shared Pramod Sharma, a resident of Nayapalli.

Statewide Temperature Patterns and Forecast

The heatwave extended beyond Bhubaneswar, with 24 additional locations across Odisha recording temperatures of 40°C or higher. Talcher registered the state's second-highest temperature at 43.5°C, indicating widespread thermal stress throughout the region.

IMD forecasts predict no significant change in the prevailing temperature trend for the next four days, maintaining the current heatwave conditions. Thereafter, meteorologists anticipate a slight relief with temperatures expected to fall by 2°C to 3°C.

"It was unbearable to move out in the scorching summer during the day," expressed Dinabandhu Boral, a retired teacher in Bhubaneswar, echoing sentiments shared by many residents who preferred indoor confinement.

Economic and Social Impacts

The soaring temperatures prompted increased sales of cooling beverages at roadside kiosks across the city. Vendors reported heightened demand for cold drinks, sugarcane juice, and other refreshments as people sought relief from the oppressive heat.

This extreme weather event underscores the growing challenges posed by climate variability in urban centers, particularly in regions like Odisha that are already vulnerable to cyclones and floods. The combination of rising temperatures and changing wind patterns creates complex environmental conditions that affect public health, economic activity, and daily life.
