Chennai Prepares for Intense Summer Heat as Temperatures Expected to Surge
As election campaigns gain momentum across the region, Chennai and its suburbs are experiencing a significant rise in temperatures, signaling the onset of a potentially harsh summer. According to weather forecasts, temperatures are projected to hover around 36-37°C on Sunday, with a notable increase expected after April 14, potentially reaching the 40°C mark.
Forecasted Temperature Spikes and Historical Trends
Bloggers and meteorologists indicate that weather models predict a sharper spike in temperatures starting from April 16, particularly in suburban areas, which are likely to breach the 40°C threshold. This trend could herald the beginning of peak summer in May, with meteorologists forecasting at least six heatwave days during that period.
Suburban regions, already warmer than the core city due to delayed sea breeze arrivals, are expected to experience these temperature increases first. Historical data from the Meenambakkam observatory over the past decade reveals consistent late-April surges, with peak temperatures often recorded after April 15. Notable examples include:
- 40.8°C in 2016
- 39.7°C in 2017
- 39.2°C in 2019
- 41.8°C in 2021
- 39.7°C in 2023
- 39.6°C in 2024
Similarly, data from the Nungambakkam observatory, representing core city conditions, shows a parallel pattern. Peak April temperatures have crossed 40°C in years such as 2016 (40.8°C) and 2021 (41.2°C), with sharp surges also observed in 2017 (39.7°C) and 2023 (38.1°C). The city's average maximum temperature for April stands at 34.7°C.
Expert Insights and Meteorological Predictions
A meteorologist explained, "Temperatures typically rise in the second half of April and peak through May and June as the sun moves northwards. This year, there is a chance of heatwave conditions in May." The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dry weather for Sunday, with maximum temperatures of 36-37°C and minimum temperatures around 27°C under partly cloudy skies.
Daytime temperatures may remain 2-3°C above normal at isolated locations, extending to a few areas on April 13 and 15. Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist at Skymet Weather, noted, "The entire country may turn hotter in the last 10 days of April due to the absence of weather systems. Even if temperatures hover around 38-39°C, rising humidity will add to discomfort."
Regional Comparisons and Current Conditions
While interior districts like Vellore (41°C) and Karur (40.5°C) have already surpassed the 40°C mark, bloggers suggest that Chennai's suburbs may follow suit around April 16. Blogger Pradeep John stated, "Models show a spike after April 14. The rest of the month is likely to be hot."
On Saturday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded temperatures of 34.6°C and 37.1°C, respectively, with humidity levels ranging between 66% and 80%, exacerbating the discomfort for residents. As the city braces for these escalating temperatures, authorities and citizens are advised to take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of the impending heatwave.
